Spring is finally here in the northeastern United States. I have always loved spring. For me, spring is about the snow melting and the cold weather finally turning warm. Spring brings most of my favorite flowers (daffodils, daisies, and those little wild violets). Leaves come out on the trees and add color to the world again.
Since I’ve become a mom, Spring means even more to me because there are additional practical benefits to spring. I am nothing if not practical. I am so practical that I think buying my professor husband a textbook for his birthday is a good gift.
So if the rain or your seasonal allergies are getting you down this Spring, consider these practical “wins” that come with Spring.
A Busy Mom’s List of Practical Advantages of Spring
Outside play is back.
It’s time for everyone to get up, stretch, and go play in the yard. If your kids are old enough – send them out to the yard to play with each other, leaving you in blissful silence in the house.
- Outdoor play is back and the indoor toys can be put aside for a while. Spring is a great time for trips to parks, zoos, and outdoor playdates.
- The old-stand-by sources of entertainment are finally returning and once again kids can be entertained with blowing bubbles, drawing on the driveway with chalk, riding a bike, and going for a walk.
- You can play outdoor games of toss, tag, and hide and seek.
- You can investigate nature and study the flowers and bugs.
Finding time for exercise is easier.
Spring is also a time when people get serious about exercising and getting in shape for the summer months. Both you and your child can get exercise at the same time. Just by chasing kids around outside you can get more activity than your body has been accustomed to playing Legos and reading books with your kids inside this past winter.
There is less laundry to do.
This is not a scientific fact, but the volume of laundry goes down as the weather gets warmer. There are fewer sweatshirts and less frequent double layers of clothes. Each time you go outside, you don’t have to bundle up in snow outfits. The amount of laundry decreases as a result
Driving during the daylight.
I love when the daylight is long enough to be able to drive home from work with the sun still out. The stress on the roads is less when it’s easier to see what you and the other commuters are doing. Also, I don’t feel like putting my pajamas on and going to bed as soon as I get home
The grill can be used again.
If you and your husband won’t grill in the wintertime because it’s too cold outside, Spring is the time to welcome back the grill. In my house, we do that as early as I can get away with it. The grill is great for a couple of reasons. You save yourself the pans required to cook inside and if you’re lucky, the kids can go outside and play while the food is being grilled. If you’re really, really lucky you have someone else handling the outside tasks and you are inside, drinking wine and making whatever food needs to be prepared indoors.
The heating bill is less.
Obviously, as the weather warms up, the heat isn’t needed as much. In a lot of cases, the air conditioning isn’t required yet. All in, all, the utilities may decrease in the Spring.
I’ve experienced Spring in the midwest, north central, mid-Atlantic, and northeastern regions of the country. The length of winter varies a little but there’s always a Spring in those areas. In all of those locations, Spring has been my favorite season. As a busy Mom, there is a lot to love about Spring because some aspects of life are going to get just a little bit easier. Hopefully, these improvements help make your spring a little happier. Blow your nose, take your allergy medicine and take the kids to the park.
